The people who understand what Hayden Panettiere went through growing up in the entertainment industry belong to a rather small club of former child stars that includes contemporaries like Hilary Duff, Alexa PenaVega, Christy Carlson Romano and Anna Paquin, all of whom this week paid tribute to the late actress following her death on Sunday, days ahead of what would have been her 37th birthday. “I remember staying up late, chatting and gossiping, and connecting because we were part of such a small sliver of people who actually understood the strange lot in life we were navigating...so young, with no real idea how to make sense of any of it,” Duff, 38, who rose to fame as a young star on the hit Disney Channel series “Lizzie McGuire,” wrote in a social media post Tuesday that she addressed to “Sweet Hayden.” “Spy Kids” star PenaVega, like many this week, referenced late actresses Michelle Trachtenberg, 39, and Daveigh Chase, 35, who also grew up working in Hollywood and both died not very long ago. “These aren’t just names from my childhood. They’re girls I grew up alongside, sharing a world that was exciting and also incredibly hard,” PenaVega, 37, wrote. “We were kids navigating something so big, and not everyone had the foundation or support they deserved.” Romano, 42, whose rise began on the Disney Channel’s “Even Stevens” wrote an essay for Elle magazine, reflecting on coming of age in an industry that “gives us the wound and then acts surprised when we reach for something to treat it.” Paquin, who won an Academy Award for her role in “The Piano” at just 11, wrote on Friday that female child stars are “not as protected by the ‘systems’ that look great on paper, as we are supposed to be.” “It’s a strange small club we belong to,” she wrote, addressing her counterparts, “and you are worthy of support no matter how our industry made us feel.” Like far too many before her, Panettiere’s death this week has put renewed light on the unique and often troubling experience of sacrificing your childhood for a career. Those of us outside that bubble are now trying to understand what Michelle Rodriguez put so bluntly this week when asked about the “Heroes” star’s death — “I just can’t stand how many young people are leaving us lately,” she told Variety. “It’s disheartening, and it’s making me think, ‘What’s going on?’ It’s not normal.” Family matters Celebrity is hard enough to navigate, but even more so for those who become famous as children. For every person who experiences struggles like Panettiere — who was open about her substance abuse, strained relationship with her former manager mother and experiencing domestic violence — there are some who grow to thrive in adulthood, even if they at times have had immense professional pressures cast upon them. In the case of Daniel Radcliffe, 37, who was 11 years old when his starring role as the title character in the “Harry Potter” franchise made him a global superstar, it is his family he credits for helping him stay grounded, saying on BBC Radio’s “Desert Island Discs” podcast in 2020 that they “were able to give me enough perspective on my life and help me at key moments.” Which is not to say he didn’t stumble. In the post-Potter years, Radcliffe has spoken about turning to alcohol, describing how getting drunk publicly ultimately led him to pursue sobriety in 2010. “If I went out and if I got drunk, I’d suddenly be aware of there being an interest in that because it was not just a drunk guy, it’s like ‘Harry Potter’s getting drunk in the bar’ and that carries its own kind of interest for people,” he said on the podcast. “Also a slightly mocking interest because it is inherently funny for people.” Jodie Foster, who started as a model before becoming a celebrated child star in the 1970s, has said her mother, a Hollywood publicist, helped her set boundaries at a very young age. “She taught me how to be careful with what I gave out. You give a lot as an actor,” the 63-year-old Oscar winner told AARP. “If I wanted to survive, there were areas that people just weren’t going to have.” Famed director Ron Howard, whose red hair and freckles helped him become one of America’s most beloved pint-sized stars during the run of “The Andy Griffith Show” in the 1960s, has also credited his parents, themselves actors, for his success. In his book “The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family” co-authored with his brother, actor Clint Howard, he wrote that their father “held the reins to my career pretty tightly throughout my childhood.” “As long as I was a minor, he and Mom were going to be the primary decision makers about my career and future, though I was always respectfully looped in.” The now 72-year-old so admired how he and his brother were raised that he has tried to model it. “My father was kind of a genius-level parent,” Howard said during a 2023 appearance on “In Depth With Graham Bensinger.” “As a parent, I really wanted to feel that I could live up to the kind of parenting that I received.” Vulnerable truths Not everyone has had such a supportive family. For every star whose family guided, protected and nurtured them through an at times dizzying industry, there’s seemingly the same number — if not more — who go no-contact with one or both parents, like Macaulay Culkin, who in 2025 said he hadn’t spoken to his father Kit in more than 30 years, or Ariel Winter, who was emancipated while she was starring on the hit ABC sitcom “Modern Family.” Other stars like Christina Ricci, 46, who first found fame as a nine-year-old in the 1990 film “Mermaids,” credit the industry for being a saving grace. “The film industry, it sort of rescued me from a childhood that was not very nice and a family that was not very safe,” she told Variety. “So to be able to escape and do this thing where I was totally safe when I was getting validation from adults, and it was based on a skill that I had that was special, I think really, really saved me.” Panettiere, worked as a child in soap operas before hitting it big in television, published a memoir three months before her death, detailing her own beginnings. “This Is Me: A Reckoning” documented her life and career, painting a visceral picture of her own strained family life, particularly with her mother Lesley Vogel, a former soap actress who took her to auditions from an early age and acted as her manager until Panettiere was 19. In the memoir, Panettiere described her mother as more of a boss than a parent and the depiction led to fiery pushback from Vogel who at the time called her daughter “entitled” and said “the present drama is partially to sell books.” After Panettiere’s death, the exact cause of which has not yet been disclosed, Vogel spoke to NBC, calling her daughter “an amazingly talented person in so many departments,” adding “I think young people who grow up in the entertainment industry — it is a struggle and it’s a very challenging industry and it’s not unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path.” There is sense of shared empathy among those who have ever been young and famous, something they give to themselves and others regardless of where their individual paths ultimately lead. Because only they know what it takes to choose themselves after giving so much of their lives to others at an age when you haven’t lived much of one at all. In her essay, Romano, the former Disney star, spoke about sometimes being met with hostility after hosting a podcast where she interviewed former young performers, including cast members from shows like “Boy Meets World” and “Full House” and former child actor Mara Wilson. The criticisms, she wrote, are “often familiar: Why are you so bitter? Why are you exploiting the names of people you once worked near?” “Calling out incongruence in the only community I was raised to know is not bitterness,” she wrote. “It is grief with a mission.”
