Police are warning the public of a high-risk offender who is now living in downtown Ottawa. According to the Ottawa Police Service, 35-year-old Aaron Gilpin relocated to Ottawa from Smith’s Falls, and police say he poses a “significant risk to public safety based on his history of violent and sexual offending.” “Gilpin has a criminal history that includes a sexual offence involving a child, assaults, weapons offences, disarming a police officer, break and enters, and thefts,” police said in a news release. In July, Smiths Falls police issued a public notice after Gilpin was spotted in the community, saying Gilpin had a criminal history dating back to the 2000s and he had been convicted of a “brutal” child-related sexual assault. Gilpin is described as a white man, approximately six-feet tall with a medium build and hazel eyes. “Anyone who observes Gilpin involved in criminal activity should not approach him and should contact the OPS High-Risk Offender Management Unit at 613-236-1222, extension 4395, or 9-1-1 in case of an emergency,” police said. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or at crimestoppers.ca.
