Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the discovery of human remains in an empty building Aug. 20 in Kirkland Lake. Police responded around 10 p.m., along with the Kirkland Lake Fire Department and Timiskaming Emergency Medical Services, to an unoccupied building on Government Road. “Preliminary information suggests this is an isolated incident with no signs of a broader threat,” the OPP said in a news release Aug. 21. “Local residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as the investigation continues.” Police haven’t said how long the human remains are suspected to have been in the building, or whether foul play is suspected. The investigation is being led by the Kirkland Lake OPP crime unit with help from OPP Forensic Identification Services and the Office of the Chief Coroner.
