A man convicted of fatally stabbing a Ukrainian newcomer nearly three years ago has been sentenced to prison. Evan Gladu was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Thursday in a Winnipeg courtroom. He was found guilty in February 2026 on a charge of manslaughter in the 2023 death of Ivan Rubanik. With credit for time served in custody, Gladu still has just over six years left to serve of his sentence. Rubanik, a Ukrainian refugee, was stabbed while on his way to work on Dec. 20, 2023. The 46-year-old was found in the area of Talbot Avenue and Watt Street and taken to hospital, where he died from his injuries. At the time, police said Gladu and Rubanik did not know each other and the incident was random. Gladu also was required to provide a DNA sample and received a lifetime weapons prohibition.
