A 41-year-old Sudbury man has been charged in connection with an animal cruelty case that emerged Aug. 20 when an attack on a dog was captured on CCTV footage. Police said the man was arrested downtown Thursday evening and charged with cruelty to animals, injuring or endangering animals, weapons possession, mischief under $5,000 and theft under $5,000. He is scheduled to appear in bail court Friday, Sudbury police said in a news release. “The investigation remains ongoing,” police said. Captured on video “Officers will continue to work in collaboration with PAWS inspectors throughout the investigative process.” A video circulating on social media Aug. 20 showed a man in a light blue jacket and a black backpack stepping on the dog’s head and abusing the pup for several minutes. “A video depicting the assault, which appeared to involve a lone individual, had been circulated on social media,” police said Thursday. “Through the course of the investigation, officers obtained CCTV footage of the incident and identified the individual believed to be responsible.” The dog was seized and taken to be examined by a veterinarian.
