Four incumbent councillors are running unopposed in this fall’s municipal election, with the clock ticking towards today’s deadline to register to run for mayor, councillor and school board trustee in the City of Ottawa. Candidates have until 2 p.m. to file their nomination papers to run in the October 26 municipal election. The city says a candidate wishing to withdraw their nomination has until 2 p.m. to notify the City Clerk in writing. As of this morning, only one candidate has registered to run in College (Coun. Laine Johnson), River (Coun. Riley Brockington), Osgoode (Coun. Isabelle Skalski) and Rideau-Jock (Coun. David Brown). According to the city, the 2003 municipal election was the only general election since amalgamation in which councillors were elected by acclamation. In 2003, Peter Hume in Alta Vista, Doug Thompson in Osgoode and Rick Chiarelli in Baseline were acclaimed. There are currently eight mayoral candidates and 81 candidates for ward councillor registered to run in the election. During the 2022 election, there were 14 mayoral candidates and 107 councillor candidates.
