A Regina mosque has received approval to broadcast a weekly call to prayer. On Friday, Regina City Jamia Masjid announced on social media that its Call to Prayer (Adhan) permit had been approved Thursday, allowing the mosque to broadcast the call from its loudspeaker on the building’s rooftop. “We would like to sincerely thank the Regina Police Service, the Mayor and City Council of Regina, local churches, faith leaders, and religious organizations who supported freedom of religion and mutual respect in our community,” read the post. According to the mosque, the call will be broadcast on Fridays and will last roughly two to three minutes. This comes after Regina City Jamia Masjid (RCJM) tested its first outdoor call to prayer in June, which sparked threats and resulted in an increased police presence near the downtown mosque. As a result of some of the online pushback, RCJM paused the broadcast and launched a survey in order to gain public feedback. “We are also deeply grateful to our neighbours and community members who stood with us, offered their support, and helped foster understanding and unity,” RCJM said.
