About 10,000 people will hit the pavement Sunday for the 35th annual Edmonton Marathon. “What started as a small local race has grown into the largest marathon in our city’s history,” said Mayor Andrew Knack at a press conference Thursday. The “flat and fast” course winds through the River Valley and Edmonton’s downtown and is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. So far, more than $100,000 has been raised by participants for local charities. Bryan Fountain, a top fundraiser, raised more than $4,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada after his wife was diagnosed with MS about a year ago. “I’ve been blown away by the generosity of friends and family,” said Fountain. Sunday’s event includes the 42.2-kilometre marathon, a half marathon, a 10-kilometre race, and a five-kilometre and one-kilometre fun run. There is also an event for elite athletes to showcase their talents and hit personal bests. The marathon starts at 7:00 a.m. Sunday.
