A two-year-old boy has died after being hit by a vehicle in a northeast Calgary parking lot. It happened around 5:35 p.m. on Sunday near the Winners at the Sunridge Shopping Centre in the 2500 block of 36 Street N.E. Calgary police say the boy was with his parents near their vehicle when he ran into the parking lot. He was then run over by a taxi. The child was taken to the Peter Lougheed Centre where he later died. Police say the 50-year-old driver of the taxi remained at the scene. Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward says it was “an unfortunate set of circumstances.” “The message I will send out to everybody is that parking lots can be dangerous areas. We’re just coming up to the holiday season, we’re not far off it (and) kids do get really excited this time of year and my advice to any parent is to make sure you’ve securely got your child in your hands.” “It does take its toll on our guys to come to these kinds of collisions, whether it be a two-year-old or whether it be a 92-year-old, it still affects our guys, it still affects any emergency services first responder in this kind of accident,” Woodward said. The death marks the 10th pedestrian fatality in Calgary in 2026, and the 33rd traffic fatality overall. Anyone with information or dash-cam footage is asked to call police at 403-266-1234.
