The Gordie Howe International Bridge’s new multi-use path got off to a strong start with thousands of people taking advantage of the new international crossing on its opening day. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) says approximately 3,400 walkers, runners, and cyclists used the toll-free path on Wednesday. Officials say the turnout reflects the excitement surrounding the new attraction, which gives pedestrians and cyclists a unique way to travel between Windsor and Detroit while connecting to trail networks and destinations on both sides of the border. “The WDBA is excited to see tremendous interest in this unique international attraction that connects people to trail networks, destinations, and experiences in both Windsor and Detroit,” the authority said in a statement. The multi-use path is free to use and is expected to remain open year-round, including during the winter months. However, officials say the path may be temporarily restricted or closed if conditions become unsafe. The bridge is equipped with sophisticated weather monitoring systems that track wind speed, temperature, precipitation, visibility, and other conditions in real time. Rather than relying on a single weather threshold, operators assess conditions as they occur to determine whether it is safe for users. If a closure or restriction is necessary, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority says it will notify the public through its website and social media channels as quickly as possible.
