Police say they arrested a man for an assault involving Justin Trudeau's security detail during the Prime Minister's visit to Victoria Thursday.

Details of the assault are unclear, but Victoria police issued a news release Friday saying the man has since been released from custody on a promise to appear in court.

An officer injured during the scuffle suffered non-life threatening injuries and has since returned to work, according to police.

Police say the investigation remains in the early stages.

Trudeau's visit to the coast guard base at Ogden Point was well-attended by protesters opposed to the federal government's approval of the contentious Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

Trudeau defended the project, stressing that protecting the environment and building the pipeline are both vital to the country's interests.
