Victoria police say four officers were assaulted during two separate incidents in the downtown core in the past 24 hours.

The first assaults took place Thursday after two officers were called to the 800-block of Cormorant Street for a report of two men fighting inside of a business.

Police say as the officers arrived, they saw a man walking away from the fight and tried to de-escalate the situation. The man became "extremely violent" and assaulted both police officers.

Back-up arrived on scene and police were able to safely arrest the man, but not before one officer's glasses were broken. The police who were assaulted did not require a trip to the hospital and returned to work that day.

Police say the man arrested was not injured, and that he was the subject of another serious altercation with officers last year. He was charged with resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and breaching probation and was set to appear in court Friday.

Early morning altercation injures two officers

In a separate incident Friday morning, two officers responded to a reported break-and-enter in the 500-block of Johnson Street at around 7:15 a.m.

They spotted a man matching a suspect description at Douglas Street and Pandora Avenue and after a brief conversation, the suspect assaulted one of the officers and tried to assault the other.

He fled the area and was tracked down to Douglas and Yates streets, where police used a Taser to try to arrest him. The weapon didn't work on the suspect, and he was taken into custody following a brief struggle that injured another officer.

Both of the injured officers in the second incident were rushed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and Victoria police say they'll potentially be off the job for some time.

The suspect was not injured and remains in custody.
