More than 800 athletes compete in Regina track-and-field championship

More than 800 young athletes from across Canada are competing in the Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Regina.

The three-day competition began Friday at the Canada Games Athletic Complex and features athletes in under-16 and under-18 categories.

Competitors are taking part in a variety of events, including sprints, distance races, jumps and throws.

“We have over 800 athletes here today,” Nujma Bond, the Royal Canadian Legion spokesperson said on Friday. “They’re competing in all sorts of different events in track and field. They’re amazing athletes.”

The championships continue through Sunday, with athletes competing for national titles and experience on the national stage.

The event is the only annual national track-and-field competition in Canada for under-16 and under-18 athletes.
