Greater Sudbury police are searching for one of three people who were in a canoe that capsized Thursday afternoon on Crowley Lake in the city’s South End. Two of the canoeists have been rescued, but a 26-year-old man is still missing, police said Friday morning. Police responded just after 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 13, along with Greater Sudbury Fire Services and Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services. “Information received indicated that three individuals had been in a canoe on the lake when it capsized,” police said in a news release Aug. 14. “Two of the individuals were located by kayakers in the area and brought safely to shore; however, the third individual and the canoe remained unaccounted for.” Aerial, shoreline searches A search of the water and shoreline area was conducted. “An aerial search was also conducted with assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police aviation services helicopter,” as well as by a Sudbury police drone. “The canoe has since been located. However, the 26-year-old man remains missing,” police said. “Search efforts are ongoing.” Sudbury police will continue their search Friday, while members of the OPP underwater search and recovery unit will search the water. “Residents can expect an increased police presence in the Crowley Lake area as search efforts continue,” police said. “We thank residents for their patience and cooperation and ask that members of the public avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to safely and effectively carry out ongoing search operations.” Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available, police added.
