Ottawa motorists will be allowed to travel a little faster on sections of Highway 416 and Highway 417, starting next week. The Ontario government is permanently increasing the speed limit from 100 km/h to 110 km/h on several highways across Ontario this summer. Starting Friday, Aug. 21, the speed limit will increase 10 km/h to 110 km/h on sections of Hwy. 416 and Hwy. 417 in Ottawa. Here is where the speed limit will increase to 110 km/h in the Ottawa area: The speed limit will also increase to 110 km/h on Highway 7 between Appleton Side Road/County Road 17 near Carleton Place and Highway 417. The speed limit will remain 100 km/h on Hwy. 417 between Leitrim Road and the Highway 416/417 interchange. The Ontario government has been increasing the speed limit on highways across Ontario since 2022. In June, the speed limit increased to 110 km/h on Hwy. 416 from Cedar Grove Road to Highway 401. The speed limit also increased to 110 km/h on Hwy. 417 east of Kingston, between Highway 15 and Highway 16. In 2022, the speed limit increased to 110 km/h on Hwy. 417 from Ottawa to the Quebec border and on Hwy. 417 from the Kanata area to Arnprior. In 2024, the Ontario government increased the speed limit on Highway 416 south of Ottawa and on sections of Hwy. 401 to 110 km/h from 100 km/h. The areas include 70 km of Highway 4417 between Hwy. 401 and Ottawa and on Highway 401 between Highway 16 to the Quebec boundary, on 66 km between Belleville and Kingston and on 44 km between Colborne and Belleville. The government says stunt driving penalties will continue to apply at 150 km/h on highways where the speed limit is 110 km/h.
