TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down in late-morning trading on Friday, dragged lower by basic materials and technology stocks, while U.S. markets were up. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 85.78 points at 35,420.06. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 42.34 points at 52,250.40. The S&P 500 index was up 9.79 points at 7,447.42, while the Nasdaq composite was up 107.92 points at 25,230.10. The Canadian dollar traded for 71.30 cents US compared with 71.36 cents US on Thursday. The September crude oil contract was up US$2.26 at US$85.85 per barrel. The December gold contract was down US$61.60 to US$4,131.80 an ounce.
