Two people from Mississauga First Nation face impaired driving charges after provincial police say they drove a golf cart and an all-terrain vehicle into an active investigation scene. Ontario Provincial Police said officers were called to a campground on Chiblow Lake Road, north of Iron Bridge, at about 1:45 a.m. on July 25 following a crash involving a side-by-side utility vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was taken to a hospital in Sudbury with non-life-threatening injuries. Vehicles approached the scene OPP said officers remained at the scene to continue their investigation and while doing so observed a golf cart and an ATV travelling slowly along Chiblow Lake Road toward the location of the crash. Both vehicles stopped “Officers stopped both vehicles,” OPP said in a news release Thursday. “During the interaction determined that both drivers had consumed alcohol.” Both drivers were taken into custody and transported to the Blind River OPP Detachment for further testing. Charges laid A 55-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man, both from Mississauga First Nation, have each been charged with two impaired driving offences – including operation with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. In addition to the charges, under provincial law, their driver’s licences were automatically suspended for 90 days and the recreational vehicles involved was impounded for seven days. Both accused are scheduled to appear in court in Elliot Lake on Oct. 1. Police remind public of rules for all vehicles OPP used the incident to highlight that impairment laws apply beyond passenger vehicles. “Impaired driving is not limited to cars and trucks,” police said, noting that operators of golf carts, ATVs, side-by-sides, boats and other motorized vehicles are expected to be sober and responsible. “Choosing to drive after consuming alcohol or drugs puts everyone at risk,” said OPP.
