Hydro One is continuing to collect data and feedback on a transmission line that will run between Sudbury and Barrie. Several open houses have been scheduled throughout the spring and summer and continue through part of August. The purpose of the open houses is to get the community familiar with the idea of the transmission line. It will be 300 kilometres long and 500 kilovolts connecting from Hanmer Transformer Station in Sudbury to Essa TS near Barrie. Hydro One says the project is for strengthening north-south transmission capacity so it can carry more power, and preparing the electricity grid as demand grows. “Back in April, we had a very large study area. At its widest was 100 kilometres in width,” says Sonny Karunakaran, a spokesperson for Hydro One. “The refinement we’ve been able to bring forward and the focused study area has an area that’s much smaller, to identify the potential locations where the transmission line could go. And it’s now approximately 40 kilometres in width in its maximum location, so that’s a substantial decrease.” The transmission line is expected to be up and running by 2032.
