The Winnipeg Police Service has made an arrest after hundreds of thousands of contraband cigarettes were seized from a West End home on Wednesday. According to police, the investigation began on Tuesday afternoon when officers were at a home in the 600 block of Sherbrook Street on an unrelated matter and saw illegal tobacco products. The property crime unit took over the investigation and got a search warrant for the home. While police secured the area pending the warrant, the suspect returned and was arrested without incident. Early on Wednesday morning, officers searched the home and found nearly 3,000 cigarette cartons with an estimated total of 600,000 individual cigarettes. Police also seized $1,500 in cash. A 36-year-old man is facing charges of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and trafficking contraband tobacco. The charges have not been proven in court. The suspect was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court.
