A vehicle caught on video making a U-turn on the Gordie Howe International Bridge has prompted officials to remind drivers what they should do if they enter the international crossing by mistake. The video, recorded Aug. 2, shows a vehicle travelling on the bridge before turning around and heading back toward Canada. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) says drivers who accidentally enter the bridge should continue forward rather than trying to turn around. “If you have accidentally entered the Gordie Howe International Bridge facilities, do not panic, reverse, or attempt a U-turn,” WDBA spokesperson Manny Paiva said in a statement. “Continue ahead: agency or operations staff will provide direction on how to proceed.” The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says turning around before reaching the United States does not allow someone to simply drive back into Canada without going through the border process. According to CBSA spokesperson Luke Reimer, anyone returning through the Canadian side of the Gordie Howe International Bridge is treated as having left Canada — even if they did not officially enter the United States. “All persons exiting the bridge on the Canadian side are obligated to stop and report to the CBSA,” Reimer said. That means a traveller who turns around on the bridge must still report to Canadian border officers and be cleared to re-enter the country. The CBSA said all travellers arriving at a Canadian port of entry must appear for an examination, with each traveller assessed on a case-by-case basis using the information available at the time. The WDBA added that drivers are responsible for following applicable traffic laws to reduce the risk of collisions and ensure predictable movements for others using the bridge.
