The Windsor police is warning the community of a debit card-swap scam after three recent incidents. Officers say in each incident, a young woman suspect approached victims in parking lots, claiming she was having trouble paying for a food delivery order. The suspect said she only had cash but needed someone with a debit card to pay the delivery driver. The suspect then allegedly gave the victim cash, asking them to put their card into a mobile payment terminal and put in their PIN. Police said after the transaction, the suspect gave the victim a fake receipt. The debit card was then switched for a similar-looking card while it was in the suspect’s possession. The WPS said the card was then used at other establishments with the PIN that was put in during the initial transaction. In each incident, victims collectively lost more than $4,000. “We are urging people to be cautious when approached by strangers in parking lots or other public places,” said Windsor Police Sgt. Rob Durling. “If something does not feel right, walk away. Never hand your debit card to another person or share your PIN. When using your card, cover the keypad and always make sure the card returned to you is yours before leaving.”
