The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge is raising questions about how quickly traffic patterns on Huron Church Road might change. The video above shows what Huron Church Road looked like on July 13, about two weeks before the Gordie Howe bridge opened. Around midday, traffic was moving steadily with a constant flow of trucks heading to the United States and others entering Canada, many likely bound for Highway 401. Compared to Tuesday, at roughly the same time of day, one day after the Gordie Howe bridge opened to traffic, there are still plenty of trucks using the Ambassador Bridge, but changes are beginning to emerge. Commercial traffic entering Canada via the Ambassador Bridge was experiencing delays, even as a significant volume of trucks continued to use the longstanding crossing. It’s still too early to determine what long-term impact the new bridge will have on traffic along Huron Church Road, but the shift is being closely watched.
