The Kitchener Rangers have promoted one of their own to lead the Memorial Cup champions next season. Jeff Kyrzakos was announced as the team’s new head coach at a press conference on Wednesday morning with Governor and COO Joe Birch, as well as General Manager Mike McKenzie. The 41-year-old first joined the Rangers ahead of the 2023/2024 season as an associate coach and assistant general manager. He worked alongside bench boss Jussi Ahokas, who was named the head coach of the Colorado Eagles, the American Hockey League’s affiliate for the Colorado Avalanche, on July 17. “I feel extremely privileged to have this opportunity,” Kyrzakos said in a media release. “Having been here for three seasons - my appreciation for the organization, the history and our fans has grown. The people who work here are some of the best. I moved here a year ago and I love being a part of this community. I can’t wait to get started.” Before joining the Rangers, Kyrzakos spent seven seasons with the Mississauga Steelheads as the team’s assistant coach and assistant general manager. He also has experience on the ice. Kyrzakos played with the Owen Sound Attack in 2005/2006 and racked up seven years of professional hockey experience before retiring in 2013 to begin his coaching career. “Jeff is an outstanding person whose character, integrity and professionalism have earned the respect of everyone in our organization,” Birch said in the release. “He is a tremendous communicator who builds strong relationships with his players and staff, and his experience and leadership have made a significant impact on our hockey club. Throughout his time with the Rangers, Jeff has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to player development and creating an environment where our athletes can succeed both on and off the ice. He has the trust and respect of our players, and we are confident he is the right leader to guide our team into the future.” Kyrzakos is now the 26th head coach in Kitchener Rangers history.
