GLASGOW — Canada’s Sarah Mitton successfully defended her women’s shot put title at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. The 30-year-old from Brooklyn, N.S., recorded a winning throw of 19.88 metres on her fifth attempt to claim gold by more than two metres. Nigeria’s Jessica Oji won silver and Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron took bronze, both with throws of 17.87. Mitton is also a two-time world indoor champion and the 2023 world silver medallist. Earlier Wednesday, Alex Bellemarre captured silver in the men’s 94-kilogram weightlifting category. The 28-year-old from La Sarre, Que., set a Commonwealth record with a 159-kilogram snatch before lifting 187 in the clean and jerk for a total of 346. Malaysia’s Mohamad Syahmi Bin Nor-Ghazali edged him for gold with a total of 347 after setting a Games record of 197 in the clean and jerk. Australia’s Oliver Riley Saxton took bronze with 336. Elsewhere, Reed De’Aeth scored nine points as Canada’s men’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball team won bronze with a 19-9 victory over host Scotland. The Canadian women fell 19-17 to Australia in their bronze-medal game. Wheelchair racer Nadini Sharma of Brampton, Ont., earned silver in the women’s 1,500-metre T54 final, finishing in a season-best 3:42.38. The Commonwealth Games continue through Sunday.
