The body of a man who drowned in a lake in southeastern B.C. last weekend has been recovered, according to authorities. First responders were called to Koocanusa Lake last Saturday, according to the Elk Valley RCMP. “Initial information indicated that a 63-year-old man from Alberta had jumped into the water to save his dog and that in the process had drowned,” the statement from the detachment said. “Patrols were conducted with the RCMP boat as well as by drone in efforts to locate the man but he was not located. The dog was able to swim to shore and was confirmed to be safe.” The man’s body was recovered with the help of the Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team on Tuesday, Mounties said, offering their condolences to the man’s loved ones. According to the province, there were 40 accidental drowning deaths between May 1 and July 16 of this year. That marked a significant, and concerning increase when compared to the same time period in 2025, during which 26 people died.
