A special prosecutor has been appointed to assist Mounties as they investigate alleged threats uttered against Nanaimo's mayor and a council member.

The BC Prosecution Service announced Wednesday that Michael Klein, a Vancouver lawyer who runs a private practice, will give legal advice to investigators as necessary, conduct any related charge assessments and head up the prosecution if charges are approved.

"The appointment of a special prosecutor is intended to avoid any potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of justice in light of the nature of the allegations and the identity of some of the complainants as elected municipal officials," the prosecution service said in a news release.

Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay said earlier this week he and Coun. Diane Brennan had threats made against their lives, and the city released a vague statement Monday confirming someone was arrested.

While McKay, councillors and the RCMP haven't confirmed who was arrested for making the alleged threats, CTV News learned earlier this week it was Chief Administrative Officer Tracy Samra.

Charges have not yet been laid and Samra was released from custody on a promise to appear in court.

The BCPS said it will not comment any further on the ongoing investigation.
