In the third round of Building Faster Fund announcements in northeastern Ontario, the city of Sault Ste. Marie is getting $600,000 from the province to help achieve at least 80 per cent of its designated housing targets, the province said a news release July 15. More than 300 homes were started in 2025 which exceeded the annual target by 101 percent. “The funding will help Sault Ste. Marie build more homes and community infrastructure while advancing the province’s plan to protect Ontario by investing in projects that support economic growth and keep workers on the job, the province said. “Being one of only a handful of municipalities to exceed its housing target for the third consecutive year reflects sustained progress and a shared commitment to getting more homes built,” said Mathew Shoemaker, Mayor of Sault Ste. Marie. “These efforts will help more residents achieve the dream of homeownership while contributing to the city’s continued growth, prosperity, and long-term success,” said Bill Rosenburg, MPP for Algoma Manitoulin. The province said it’s also helping to speed up the construction of new homes and infrastructure by streamlining development processes and reducing unnecessary costs.
