There's more unrest at Nanaimo City Hall, where another high-ranking city staffer is on leave for undisclosed reasons.

Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay confirmed the the city's Chief Financial Officer Victor Mema is on leave from his duties.

In addition to being the city's CFO, Mema was back-filling for previously arrested Chief Administrative Officer Tracy Samra.

McKay also released a statement Friday saying that he and council have learned about "an allegation of significant concern," and they have requested an independent investigation into the matter.

"We take these concerns very seriously and share Nanaimo residents’ commitment to prudent and thoughtful governance and processes," a news release from the city said. "Council is therefore committed to addressing and resolving these matters in the public interest."

The mayor would not confirm if the allegation was linked to Mema.

It follows months of turmoil at city hall, including Samra's arrest earlier this month.

The RCMP Island District launched an investigation after Samra was arrested at city hall over alleged threats against McKay and Coun. Dianne Brennan.

A special prosecutor has since been appointed to investigate the alleged threats.
