Sooke RCMP say a man accused in a bizarre break-in attempt at a local bank last week has been arrested and charged.
Police were called to the TD Bank branch on Sooke Road Thursday for a report of a possible break-and-enter and found the drive-through ATM area had been badly damaged.
The garbage can and deposit slip holder were ripped clean off an exterior wall and investigators found a hole six inches in diameter had been cut to gain entry to the inside of the bank.
Police said the hopeful thief didn't end up gaining access into the bank.
The suspect, 34-year-old Sooke Resident Gregory John Cunningham, was eventually found sleeping in the ATM enclosure at the bank's entrance.
"It appeared to the first responding officer to be a pile of clothes, but when the back-up officer got there he determine it was a male sleeping, and not only that, but the suspect," said Sooke RCMP spokesman Staff-Sgt. Jeff McArthur.
Cunningham was arrested and has been charged with break-and-enter, possession of housebreaking instruments and possession of methamphetamine, according to Sooke RCMP.
Cunningham remains in custody and will make his next court appearance on Jan. 18.
