A Vancouver Island man accused in a brutal sex assault that took place in Denver last year has pleaded not guilty.

Colby Messer, 30, faces two counts of sexual assault and entered the not guilty plea at an arraignment hearing in Denver on Monday.

His next court date is a motions hearing on Nov. 28, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

Messer was released from custody in March after posting a $300,000 U.S. cash bond, but he was forced to surrender his passport, remain in Denver and wear a tracking device.

Messer initially faced six charges related to the alleged assault, but four of those were dropped in August.

Court documents allege he flew to Denver to go to a football game with three of his friends when they met the woman at a bar.

She said in a sworn affidavit that she doesn’t remember how she got to the hotel but remembered being naked in a hotel room and sexually assaulted with a lamp, remote control and telephone.

Messer was arrested in March when he returned to the United States.
