There’s a BIG cool down set to hit during the Thanksgiving long weekend. Single-digit highs and a chance of some showers (snow in parts of the province). However, we’re still in some warm air through the next three or four days. So... we’ll get back to that weekend outlook in a minute. Let’s focus on the short-term first. Sunshine this morning will give way to some clouds this afternoon as an area of low pressure moves across the north. There’s a chance for some scattered showers in Edmonton and surrounding areas, but most of the precipitation should be in northeastern Alberta. Wind is expected to pick up through the day with gusts around 40 km/h midday and this afternoon and temperatures will get close to 20 km/h. The wind will ease tonight and then pick up again through the day Tuesday. We’ll start Tuesday with some clouds (and a slight chance of a shower), then get some clearing later in the afternoon. Temperatures should top out in the mid to upper teens Tuesday afternoon. We’re still in the warm spell Wednesday as temperatures hits the mid teens under partly cloudy skies. THEN...the pattern starts to shift. Cooler air starts to move in aloft as an upper trough gets set to sweep across the province Friday/Saturday. A strong area of low pressure develops at the surface and should move into western Alberta early Friday. There’s still some uncertainty with exactly where that system will develop and that’ll play a key role in where the heavier rain hits. At this point, it looks like that we’ll get some showers or periods of rain in the Edmonton area Friday with the heavier precipitation north of Edmonton (Peace Country through Slave Lake and over towards Bonnyville in the east). However, if that system develops a bit further south... we could be looking at some steadier rain in the Edmonton area Friday. Behind that system, colder air gets dragged in at the surface AND we’ll have some colder air aloft thanks to the upper trough. That will likely mean snow for the mountain parks and parts of western Alberta Friday/Saturday. It’s possible we get some wet snow in the Edmonton area as well early Saturday. We’ll also have some gusty wind for both Friday/Saturday. All-in-all... it’s looking like a rather nasty end to the week and a chilly start to the long weekend. Daytime highs are projected to be around 10-12 C Friday, near 5 C Saturday and then in the 7-12 C range for Sunday/Monday in Edmonton. All of that is subject to change a bit as we head through this week and the pattern actually materializes. Bottom line: Enjoy a few more warm days, because it’s getting chilly for the end of the week with a good chance of showers (and possibly some wet flurries) to start the long weekend.
