For about C$1,200, you can vacation in the summer house of one the most infamous figures in American history: Jimmy Hoffa. On the Michigan shores of Lake Orion, “The Hoffa House” is open to vacationers looking to spend a night in the Hoffa family vacation home. In an interview with the Detroit Free Press, Susan and John Hagen said they bought the house in May 2025 and are advertising it as “more than a place to stay; it’s a story you get to be part of.” James “Jimmy” Hoffa was a U.S. labour icon, leading the International Brotherhood of Teamsters between 1957 and 1971. He disappeared in 1975 and was legally declared dead in 1982. The house was purchased by Hoffa in 1947 and features a walkout basement, 53 metres of waterfront and a private dock. The property includes a totem pole, a tennis court and a basement dry bar. “We’ve been giving tours for the last six months,” John Hagen said, “people love going in the house and seeing the history of the house.” The house is priced at C$1,203 for a two-night October vacation stay on Airbnb. It’s also available for a similar price on VRBO. Jim Hoffa, Jimmy Hoffa’s son, spoke with FOX 2 Detroit about his memories in the house. He said it’s where his high school had its graduation party. ”My dad was making pancakes for all of us early in the morning,” he said. “I remember times like that, cooking out and being together as a family. Swimming together, hunting turtles, doing all the things young people do with my dad there. It was a great memory and a great way to grow up.” The Hagens also told Fox 2 Detroit they have been renovating the house since they bought it. “We’ve met a lot of great people locally that had ties to this house,” Susan Hagen said. “It brought a great opportunity. It’s just exciting to see it come back to what it should be.” Hoffa’s shadowy disappearance Hoffa was last seen in July 1975 and was set to meet alleged mobsters Anthony Provenzano and Anthony Giacalone. Both Provenzano and Giacalone denied having met Hoffa. Although the case was never solved, conspiracy theories suggest Hoffa was murdered by organized crime. The details of the murder remain unclear but Hoffa’s legacy was tarnished after spending time in prison on corruption charges. The FBI called the pension he founded “the most abused, misused pension fund in America.” Organized crime families used loans from the fund for casinos, one of which was supervised by Hoffa’s administrator of the pension fund, the New York Times wrote in 1986. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters calls Hoffa “a worker’s hero” on their website. “Organize. Organize some more. It is the way we can show the powers that be that they are not going to take away our wages, hours and benefits,” Hoffa said in 1965. “Our voice will be too loud and strong to ignore.”
