Shirley Hughes will be able to sleep soundly under her newly redone roof after she won a contest on The Bear’s radio station. “It’s just a huge stress taken off my shoulders,” said Hughes. “Not only for today, but for the rest of the time I live in the house for my retirement.” Hughes’ old roof was 31 years old. She kept putting off replacing it after her son got sick. Then she was injured and wasn’t able to work. “There’s always something every year that has to be done … And now that I’m a senior, it’s hard to get that income from nowhere,” said Hughes. She was considering taking another mortgage out on her home until she won The Bear’s radio contest. “It changes my whole retirement … It’s a huge stress relief financially now, and probably for as long as I live.” With files from CTV News Edmonton’s Darcy Seaton
