Fire investigators believe a storage facility that went up in flames Wednesday afternoon may have been used as a marijuana grow-op.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing out of the building on Highway 1 at Sprott Road just after 1 p.m.

About 30 firefighters from several departments responded to the blaze.

Although it was extinguished quickly, fire crews said there were some challenges.

“Just getting access, the roof started to collapse and fail, we couldn’t have anybody go inside so it was an outside, exterior fight,” said Deputy Chief Brad Coleman of the South End Fire Department.

Several homes in the area lost power as a result of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
