It was almost all good news from the City of Calgary on Thursday with its Bearspaw South feeder-main update. Construction is progressing well. The work is still on schedule, and crews are confident it’ll be wrapped by the end of this year. Roughly 80 per cent of the new Bearspaw South feeder main is now installed in the ground. Since January, workers have been tunnelling and installing both a concrete carrier pipe and a new steel feeder main. The next big stage of construction will start in late October or early November. It’ll include a fall water shutdown to tie everything into the existing network and to do some feeder-main updating along Parkdale Boulevard and Memorial Drive. “We’re going to have to de-water the feeder main—empty it, drain it out—do some cutting, do some installation, welding of steel pipe connecting into the old feeder main,” said Darren Finney, major projects manager. “This is going to look and feel exactly like what we’ve seen before in the spring when we were in the same spot with the Stage 4 water restrictions and the indoor conservation,” said Michael Thompson, water utility chief operating officer. The city says access to roadways, sidewalks and certain properties is being restored as construction moves along. Officials expect landscaping restoration to continue into the spring.
