Traffic disruptions expected on busy Halifax road for two years, starting next week

Motorists can expect traffic disruptions on a busy Halifax road starting next week as the city begins Phase 2 of the Bayers Road Transit Priority Corridor project.

Phase 2 construction work will begin Tuesday on Bayers Road and continue during construction seasons for about two years.

The project will see the construction of dedicated bus lanes on Bayers Road and prepare the corridor for the proposed Bus Rapid Transit service.

Phase 2 of the project focuses on Bayers Road, between Connaught Avenue and Young Street, connecting the dedicated transit lanes from the first phase on Bayers Road, between Romans and Connaught avenues, to the intersection of Young and Windsor streets.

The street will also be repaved, curbs and sidewalks will be replaced

Traffic and transit impacts

The Halifax Regional Municipality says motorists can expect the following traffic impacts:

• the inbound lane of Bayers Road will be open to outbound traffic only during much of the project. Inbound traffic will be directed along clearly marked detour routes.
• short-term full road closures will be required at times. Planned road closures or changes to traffic patterns will be communicated in advance.

HRM says local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

Sections of sidewalks will be closed in some areas as construction progresses, but local residents and businesses will have access to their properties.

Halifax Transit stops along Bayers Road between Connaught Avenue and Windsor Street will not be in service during construction. Temporary stops will be in place along Connaught Avenue, Almon Street and Windsor Street.
