NDP Leader John Horgan will visit Bella Bella today to get a first hand look at the impact of a diesel fuel spill from a tug boat that ran aground just west of the remote community.
Horgan says he was invited to visit by the Heiltsuk Tribal Council, which is disappointed by what they say is the slow response from both the provincial and federal governments to an “environmental disaster.”
Efforts to drain the remaining diesel from the tug have been hampered by bad weather, and storms are in the forecast for Seaforth Channel again today.
Experts say more resources are needed to speed up the response to marine accidents that happen in foul weather -- especially since the north and central coasts are notorious for powerful storms.
