Nanaimo RCMP are investigating after four cars were set ablaze early Wednesday morning.
Police officials responded to a call around 3:30 a.m. at Piper’s Lagoon, a popular fishing and hiking spot.
RCMP say two cars were fully engulfed in flames and the fire had spread to a third vehicle and nearby fence panels.
They got a call about a fourth vehicle fire on McGirr Road an hour later.
Mounties said they found one of the cars with the gas cap open and a side door open as well.
They consider the two incidents to be suspicious.
“The chances of having a fourth fire, vehicle fire, within that area, it’s only about two kilometres away, is quite unlikely,” Cst. Gary O’Brien told CTV News.
Police have made contact with some of the registered owners. They are asking that any witnesses contact them.
“It appears to be deliberately set, anybody starting fires we want to make sure we identify who this person is or people and put a stop to it as quick as possible,” O’Brien noted.
The damages are estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.
