An early morning crash that shut down a downtown Victoria street was likely caused by a medical event, police say.

A man was driving his truck westbound on Yates Street, past Douglas Street, when he mounted the curb and crashed into a lamp standard, according to Victoria police.

There were no passengers in the vehicle and police said it's fortunate no pedestrians were struck.

Police believe the vehicle was accelerating when it mounted the curb.

The medial issue the driver experienced is unknown. He's now recovering in hospital.

The crash closed Yates Street between Douglas and Broad streets for several hours.
