A man was killed after a house in Campbell River went up in flames late Wednesday morning, according to the BC Coroners Service.
First responders were called after witnesses saw flames shooting from a home in the Glen Alder RV Park on South Island Highway.
"Once it started going it got pretty high. [The flames] were shooting up past the roof," said Donna Kurpiela, who manages the park.
She said neighbours immediately knew the occupant of the home was still inside because his truck was parked outside.
Kurpiela's daughter Saje tried to alert him by throwing a rock through a rear window and yelling his name, but got no response, she said.
The victim was a man in his 70s named Gord who was quiet and kept to himself, according to Kurpiela.
"A lot of people know him," she said. "It definitely hits home."
She said a number of space heaters kept in the home may have played a role in the fatal fire.
Fire investigators were on scene at the charred unit and have not released any details on the blaze, including the name of the victim.
