Family hopes for renewed search efforts two years after Earl Moberg’s disappearance

Two years after Earl Moberg disappeared in Winnipeg, his family is still searching for answers.

The Moberg family is marking a grim anniversary as they prepare for a third Christmas without their father.

It has been two years since Earl Moberg was last seen in the River East area on Dec. 12, 2023. The 81-year-old man who had been living with dementia is believed to have gotten lost while out on a walk.

“We still haven’t found his remains at this point,” his daughter Britt told CTV News. “I spent the last two years trying to just advocate for change, basically.”

Part of Britt’s work has ended up on Parliament Hill. She and other family members have been pressing the Manitoba and Federal governments to establish a silver alert system that notifies mobile phones based on geography when a vulnerable senior goes missing.

“We know that if people are not found, even within 12 hours, there’s already a 50 per cent chance of them being seriously injured or deceased from, you know, hypothermia, dehydration, drowning,” she said.

A petition signed by more than 7,300 people made it to the House of Commons last month. On Thursday, Britt’s petition received an official response from Canada’s Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree.

“It’s promising; we’re really hoping that the provinces are going to be on board with supporting this initiative,” Britt said. “I 100 per cent believe that could have saved my father’s life, and I absolutely believe that this could save other people’s lives.”

Britt has also penned a letter to Premier Wab Kinew and Manitoba’s Justice Minister Matt Wiebe asking for a review of how her father’s search was handled. She is also requesting more resources for a renewed search.

“We’re really hoping that there can be some further renewed efforts to find my dad and bring him home,” she said.

Missing posters for Earl remain posted on the corner of Henderson Highway and Chief Peguis Trail—the area where Earl was last seen. While presumed dead, Britt hopes people will not forget about her father.

“I’d like people to continue to be aware that my dad’s remains actually haven’t been found.”
