Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says the City of Ottawa will “do everything possible” to ensure the safety of participants at Capital Pride events next month after a weekend attack at a Pride event in Germany. Authorities said one person is dead and 29 others were injured when someone drove a van into a crowd near Berlin’s Pride festival on Saturday night before stabbing others with a machete. The suspect in the attack was shot and killed by police during a confrontation in a suburb of Berlin on Sunday, according to authorities. In a post on social media, Sutcliffe said it was “shocking to hear about the attack” during Pride celebrations in Berlin. “With our own Pride celebrations only a few weeks away, this strikes very close to home for many Ottawa residents,” Sutcliffe said. “This morning, I spoke with the chair of the board of Capital Pride and the Chief of Ottawa Police. Working with all partners, we will do everything possible to ensure the safety of all participants in Capital Pride events, including the parade on Aug. 30.” Capital Pride runs Aug. 19 to 30 in Ottawa, wrapping up with the Pride Parade in downtown Ottawa on Aug. 30. The theme for this year’s Capital Pride is “Together, We Shine.”
