Sunshine, soaring temperatures, and even snow are all in the mix this week in Winnipeg and southern Manitoba. Monday afternoon starts out with brisk north winds, cloudy skies, and possibly a few flurries. Some sunshine should break through as the day wears on. Daytime highs across the south Monday will rise above freezing but remain unseasonably cool for mid-April. Conditions across northwestern Ontario will be similar on Monday. Much of northern Manitoba will enjoy a mix of sun and cloud on Monday, but there is also the chance a few flurries will scatter across the region. Temperatures in most northern areas will reach or exceed the freezing mark, except for the areas furthest north that will be considerably colder, with chilly daytime highs in the mid-minus teens. Meanwhile, a low developing in northern Alberta on Monday will bring four to eight centimetres of snow to the most northern regions in Manitoba on Tuesday, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). But wait, there’s more—much more. ECCC said a second low could bring 15-20 cm of snow across the northern grain belt in Saskatchewan and central Manitoba Tuesday evening through Wednesday. Meanwhile, Tuesday and Wednesday will bring the first real taste of springtime to Winnipeg and the south. We can look forward to sunshine and double-digit highs. By Wednesday, Winnipeg could soar as high as 18 C. But don’t get used to it—rain returns Thursday with much cooler temperatures. By Friday, rain or even snow is possible with daytime highs that will struggle to reach the freezing mark.
