Thousands of people flocked to Victoria’s Moss Street on Saturday for a chance to see artists at work.
More than 160 artists brought their studios to the street for the annual TD Art Gallery Paint-In.
Around 30,000 people were expected to stroll the street, taking in the colourful walk from Fort Street to Dallas Road.
Artists mentioned the paint-in is a great way to get exposure.
“One year I got some gallery representation at the Eclectic Gallery on Oak Bay Avenue because they saw me working here,” artist Peggy Fletcher said.
Painters said they enjoy being able to explain their work to people passing by.
“Being able to see people’s reactions when they see your art and to hear their questions and just being able to connect with them, that’s the best part,” artist Tracy Risinger said.
Fairfield United Church and Our Place Society partnered together to feature what they call ‘vulnerable artists’ at the event. They helped around 10 artists, who did not have to go through the usual jury process, to participate.
One of those artists, Bob Sellmer, said he hopes to have an “official” spot next year.
Art helped Sellmer recover from an accident where he was hit with a bus a decade ago.
He said that he appreciates having the chance to participate in the popular event.
“It makes you feel like an artist, as opposed to being called an artist. It’s different to feel like one,” Sellmer told CTV News.
