Police say they encountered a woman and a 19-month-old child the day before the toddler was found dead at a downtown Victoria hotel.
A witness called police with concerns over the “loud praying and actions” of a woman at Clover Point near Dallas Road on Friday.
The woman had a three-year-old girl and the now-deceased toddler with her, according to police.
Officers spoke with the woman, the children and the person who reported the event, then spoke with other agencies in the Capital Region, police said.
They’re now looking to talk to anyone else who witnessed the incident Friday.
Police were called to Hotel Zed in the 3100-block of Douglas Street on Saturday at around 4 a.m. for reports of a screaming woman.
They found a distraught woman, a young child and the 19-month-old toddler, who had no vital signs and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman and the other child were taken to hospital to receive medical attention.
The identity of the toddler has not been released.
No charges have been laid and police aren’t saying whether the death is considered suspicious.
Investigators from Victoria Police, the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit and the BC Coroners Service are probing the cause of death.
