Mounties say they’re taking increased calls related to bear activity on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast RCMP said there have been a significant number of calls in Sechelt, Pender Harbour, and Madeira Park as of late. Police said conservation officers believe bears are lingering due to their attraction to fruit trees in these communities. “Residents are advised to ensure all attractants are properly managed by picking fruit from trees and the ground, securing garbage and removing birdfeeders. Don’t give bears a reason to linger in communities and create risk to people and themselves,” Sunshine Coast RCMP wrote, in a release issued Friday. On Sept. 27, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service posted to social media detailing public reports of grizzly bear activity on the Sunshine Coast, again in Sechelt, Pender Harbour, and Madeira Park, and issuing the same advice regarding fruit trees. “People are advised to familiarize themselves with safety precautions in case of wildlife encounters, including being aware of your surroundings, leashing pets and travelling in groups,” the BCCOS said at the time. Mounties said conservation officers will continue monitoring bear activity in the area and responding “as necessary to ensure public safety.” Those wishing to report bear sightings have been asked to call the Report All Poachers and Polluters line at 1-877-952-7277.
