The London Police Service is joining services across the country for Operation Impact 2026 over the Thanksgiving long weekend. It’s a national public awareness and traffic enforcement campaign focused on reducing preventable collisions, injuries and deaths on Canada’s roads. Through education and enforcement, LPS officers aim to do their part to help ensure everyone reaches their destination safely. “Every serious collision leaves a lasting impact on families and our community. This long weekend, our officers will be watching for the driving behaviours that put people at risk. Slow down, stay focused, drive sober, and buckle up. Your choices can save a life,” said Staff Sgt. Anderson of the London Police Service’s Road Safety Section. Taking place from Oct. 9 to 12, Operation Impact encourages all road users to make safe, responsible choices behind the wheel. This year’s campaign theme, “Safety is in your hands,” highlights the important role every driver plays in helping keep Canada’s roads safe. Whether travelling across the country or just across town, drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, drive sober, avoid distractions, obey posted speed limits, remain alert and well-rested, and ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled up. Police say recent police-reported data demonstrates the continued need for education, awareness and enforcement. In 2025, police services across Canada reported more than 123,000 Criminal Code traffic offences, including nearly 67,400 alcohol- and drug-impaired driving offences, while hundreds of collisions causing bodily harm involved alcohol or drug impairment (Statistics Canada). Dangerous driving contributed to 139 fatal collisions and 556 collisions causing bodily harm.
