Ottawa firefighters intervened to apprehend a suspect after witnessing an assault in downtown Ottawa Friday night. According to a statement from Ottawa police, a man was reported to have assaulted two people near Rideau Street and Dalhousie Street at approximately 7:55 p.m. Police say neither victim knew the man. Video footage captured by CTV News Ottawa shows firefighters, who were in the area attending to another call, detaining the alleged assailant. Ottawa police soon arrived to arrest the man. “Our Firefighters witnessed a violent assault on Rideau Street and immediately stepped in to protect a 75-year-old woman and prevent further harm,” Nick DeFazio, public information officer with Ottawa Fire Services, said. “We thank our partners at Ottawa Police for their quick response and assistance in bringing this dangerous situation under control. Our thoughts are with the victim as she recovers.” Ottawa paramedics say they responded to a call for a woman in her 70s who had been assaulted. According to paramedics, the woman was not transported to the hospital. Police say the man is facing multiple criminal charges, including assault causing bodily harm, assault, resisting arrest, assault with intent to resist arrest and breach of probation.
