Fire officials say two people suffered smoke inhalation in an overnight blaze that destroyed their Nanaimo home.

East Wellington Volunteer Fire Department was called to the home on Webster Road around 12:50 a.m. and arrived to find it engulfed by flames.

Three engines responded and crews were able to stop flames from spreading to an accessory building and a shed, but the home is considered a write-off.

A couple in their 60s made it out of the building burning safely, but inhaled smoke and had to be taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries were not considered serious.

A dog also made it out of the home without injury.

Fire investigators haven't pinpointed what started the fire, which homeowners believe originated in a crawl space.

Officials say there was propane inside the house but aren't ruling out the possibility of an electrical fire.

An overhaul team was back on site throughout the day Wednesday to investigate.
