Two dogs are dead after a fire ripped through a house in Saanich on Wednesday.

More than a dozen firefighters responded to the call in the 1200-block of Burnside Road West just after 5 p.m.

When they arrived flames were shooting out of the back of the building.

According to fire crews, it's suspected the blaze started in the kitchen and spread to the attic.

The homeowner was the only person home with her two dogs when the fire broke out.

Saanich fire confirmed the pets perished from smoke inhalation.

A woman sustained minor injuries to her hand, officials say.

Damage is estimated at $300,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters say it may have started when a scooter battery exploded while charging.
